Investigating Free Money: Kevin Trudeau Creates a Fake News Program

Kevin Trudeau thinks of himself as a brave truth-teller boldly exposing the lies of greedy pharmaceutical companies and banks. He believes his legal troubles are simply an attempt by a corrupt Federal government—obeying the orders of its corporate paymasters—to silence an honest whistleblower.

So what does this valiant champion of truth, justice, and the American way do next?

Shamelessly attempts to fool the public into thinking his paid infomercial is a legitimate investigative news program called “Investigating Free Money.” Have a look at it yourself:

The most important part comes right at the start, when this appears on the screen:

It says “The following program is a paid advertisement for Kevin Trudeau’s Free Money.” Yet that disclaimer takes 3 seconds of the 28 minute “program”—making it certain most viewers will never even see it. (That same small print disclaimer is also placed quietly on the bottom of the screen a few other times during the program; it amounts to another handful of seconds total.) If a “big corporation” pulled a stunt like this Kevin Trudeau would probably spend hours ranting about it on his radio show.

This advertisement is carefully patterned after well known investigative journalism programs like 20/20, Dateline NBC and 60 Minutes. They even have host Misha Di Bono sitting in front of a mock magazine layout just as 60 Minutes does with its reporters:

Trusting Misha DiBono to “investigate” Kevin Trudeau is as crazy as trusting Ronald McDonald to investigate a Big Mac.

This program pretends as if it is going to expose Trudeau as a fraud by tracking down the people mentioned in his book and finding out if they really got all the money he claimed. When they do get these people in front of a camera—surprise!—they insist they really did get all the thousands or millions of dollars Kevin said they did.

The infomercial is very slickly produced and a lot of people will be fooled by it. No doubt Kevin Trudeau’s Illuminati/Bilderberger mentors in GIN have trained him well in the dark arts of PsyOps. (The previous sentence was a joke, by the way.)

The sad thing is that for all his ranting Kevin Trudeau does sometimes make important points about government threatening free speech and arbitrarily harassing businesses they don’t like. (For example, the impending SOPA bill making its way through Congress is a true assault on free speech and free enterprise on the Internet.) Yet even on those rare occasions when he says something valid, Kevin Trudeau remains a deeply flawed and self-serving messenger.

  • How’s it “fooling” anyone? It says throughout the infomercial that it’s a “paid advertisement for Free Money”.

  • 1) The triumphant victory pose photos of K. T. really sell the silliness.

    2) I love how at first they censor/mask the people who give the testimonials, then later show them in full face.

    3) Sadly, this could fool older people. I’ll be curious to see how long any government official lets this go on.

  • I’m seeing this infomercial on TV right this second and came here just to see if it there was an entry about it, and sure enough…

It’s by far the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen in all my years of watching infomercials; so shameless.

Comment by BOTR on January 1, 2012 at 5:50 am

  • As sleazy and awful as this is, it’s nothing new. Infomercials disguised as talk shows and investigative reports have been plaguing us for years. Trudeau’s format is actually a complete rip-off an earlier “investigative journalism” rip-off informercial called “Inside & Out with Nanette Harrison” that plugged that ridiculous “Six Week Body Makeover” regimen. However, it’s more refreshing to see this than those shoddily made pill pushing “Larry King Live” knock-offs.

  • The cliche holds: “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.”

The fact that he does get a few things right does not make him anything less than a broken clock.

Comment by Scott Mercer on January 10, 2012 at 1:40 pm

  • The first really big sign that this is a book plug is the lack of mentioning/giving the address of the website shown in the first part (where people apparently “find” hundreds of dollars).

An *actual* investigative program, on the other hand, would’ve given the website address.

  • I’m not sure what I think of this guy for sure. If I were in his shoes and had had so much trouble with the government, I think most people would have a similar state of mind. Whatever he was initially selling certainly wasn’t as big a rip off as a lot of things we all buy all the time. But the governments response seems pretty harsh, to fine him $37 million dollars. If he has enough people paying 30 bucks for his book about ‘whatever the subject may be’ more power to him. It’s not like he wasn’t sending the book and was taking the money. There’s really no scam involved. The govt just didn’t like him saying what he was saying more than anything….at least that’s what I think. I’m sure most everyone will disagree, but as long he isn’t taking people’s money and not giving them any product, I say let free speech and commerce regulate themselves. You can’t stop people from being stupid enough to order from him.

Comment by Kaloyan on January 20, 2012 at 10:55 pm

  • I see poor people all day long who are unemployed and are worrying about losing their homes, have small children and dont want to be homeless. They are looking for legal ways to save themselves and their children. Only people who have not been in this situation would post the thoughtless and callous view like Kaloyan. They simply have not been there and have no empathy. Probably a republican.

Comment by zoinco on February 10, 2012 at 2:52 pm

  • Come on, folks.

American society is such that nothing is free and nothing is given freely.

What does exist in America, are people who simply find “hooks” to get to your credit card. Plain ‘N Simple.

These scammers know people are desperate and at wits end and need a way out of their financial problems.

When their are more complaints than success stories, beware.

American society breeds liars and scammers at every level and turns them out on poor and unsuspecting people.

I sent a letter to each address and got Eight percent of them back as no such address. I sent him the letters that I had gotten back as proof that the information was bogus. I never heard back from anyone affiliated with him.

Why save money, why learn how to invest, when you can scratch a card with a penny like a monkey, or get a book that will tell you how to get money for doing nothing?

    You deserve what you get.

  • Kevin Trudeau appears to has disassociative behavior; otherwise, how can he stare into the camera and lie through his teeth without breaking a sweat. He know the info is fraudulent yet he keeps doing. He should be MADE to refund EVERYONE’S MONEY that purchased ANY of his books. He is a POMPOUS, ARROGANT, EGOTISTICAL LIAR and CROOK. Being fined 37million isn’t enough. I would be ashamed to know him. I have been called tenacious, recalcitrant, and obstreperous but this man brings out my pugnacious side and that is never good. MAKE HIM REFUND PEOPLE’S MONEY and then THROW HIS DECEITFUL,
LYING, FRAUDULENT BUTT IN PRISON!!! How can he get out of bed in the morning knowing everything he says and does is a lie? He makes me sick!

  • I woke up to this informerical around 3am so I missed the disclaimer at the bottom of the screen. Even half asleep, I knew this was a scam! I chuckled when the woman was on the street with her laptop asking random folks to check out the website. What a load of BS! It’s too bad; that infomerical will prey on people looking for some relief from their financial burdens.

Comment by Crystal on May 7, 2012 at 6:49 pm

  • I saw the infomercial for the first time this morning and knew instanting it was a scam endorsement of Kevin Trudeau. If people would just wise up and do the research, they would see all the people who have been scammed out of their money from purchasing his worthless book. Those people from the paid infomercial should be ashamed of themselves for participating in his continuing scams.

Comment by Beverly McLeod on June 15, 2012 at 6:39 am

  • My aunt is one of the actors on the show that they makes you think is a real investigating show called “investigating free money “. Its really put on by Keven Trudeau, and its not a real investigation. It’s a commercial to make you think people are getting free money. The problem is that there are so many uneducated people buying the book that it out ways the fines that are being brought by the government.
Example when he gets a fine for selling the books again, they fine him 1 million dollars, BUT he has made 10 million selling the books, so he really makes 9 million. So wouldn’t you do the same! Its really, really sad the percentage of ignorant people in america, but you can’t fix stupid ! ! !

Comment by Manny R. on June 16, 2012 at 1:35 am

  • The 37 million fine is peanuts if you investigate how many times this guy has been fined in the past. He has been found guilty of false and deceptive mass marketing, and unfounded claims of false hope on so many previous occasions it is not funny. He just doesn’t get the message to stop taking advantage of people. Rather, he does so, then blames the government for trying to “silence” him. Damn straight they are, they should, and his books are quite frankly worthless. Unfortunately there are a lot of stupid and/or hopeless people who will buy them thinking they will get something for free.

Comment by Robert on September 10, 2012 at 5:31 am

  • Unfortunately, there are people in this world who just don’t have good sense and they will be taken advantage of. He gets their hard-earned money when they buy that glorified paperweight he calls a book whether they find their “free money” or not. It’s like paying for a gift-wrapped cardboard box knowing that it may or may not have a gift inside it!

That’s why crooks like Kevin Trudeau should be thrown in jail with both lock and key destroyed and the cell door welded shut.

  • We know of three different groups of people, those whom expect to get a handout to receive there fortune, those whom are willing to work for theirs, and those who realize that working, timing, drive, motivation, ethics, knowledge, and a dash of luck are the true road to riches.
P.T. Barnum put it bet when he said “there’s a sucker born every minute” and he, like Trudeau is simply a successor in a long line of opportunists willing to make a quick buck on the suckers.

  • Ya, after about 5 min I knew something was funny and figured this was actually his own creation making him look good. As for the money owed to you web site, It is legit, I found $600 owed to me from an old utility refund when I moved out of Alaska. As for the book and free stuff in that, i can not say, I never read his book, but I did get a simulir book from someone else and it is full of programs go get free money and grants, but guess what, I did not qualify for a single one. If you are a minority with kids and a single parent. You might have better luck.

  • Kevin T. is ridiculous and I hope and pray that they will send him to prison.I honestly don’t know or understand how he ISN’T incarcerated. Also, just to see what it would be like to attempt to order a book,I called the number shown during the infomercial, and a woman answered sounding like she was reading off of a sheet of paper, while sitting at home in front of her tele eating cheetos.I asked her how long it would take to receive the book and she replied a whopping 3-6 weeks!!! What legitimate business or business person would take such a lengthy period of time to send a product??? I questioned her about the ludicrous time frame, and she had no response to the absurdity of it all. Then she gave me the customer service number to complain (and if I did call,I’m sure it would have been redirected to her another scammer). I wouldn’t ever feel comfortable giving my information to people like this anyway.I guess this last book of his isn’t carried in stores because the content are lies.He will get his eventually.

I’m thinking “all this fluff is way too much NICENESS to be a real “investigation.” They’re ADVERTISING for this guy.” Then I got online and see all this stuff about him not being able to do infomercials. So, why not make a news show to boost sales? INGENIOUS!

AND he has a whole call center of people who haven’t made A DIME from this “FREE MONEY” book? REALLY? I could have cast this show better. Then to top it all off, the people who’ve made the most “free money” live a step higher than the homeless…come on now?
