Lost Santo Gold Auction Video with a Clip from Blood Circus

Quite a while ago, I received an email and a Santo Gold video clip from Ridiculous Infomercial Review reader John Heyn. This was different from the Santo Gold infomercial that I review on my site. Apparently this was an auction-style broadcast where they sold jewelry and showed clips from the movie Blood Circus.

John explains how he got a hold of this gem:

I used to work at video duplication company in downtown Washington DC from ’85-87. A job came in to duplicate 8 one hour-long tapes of this “home shopping show”. A chaotic TV “auction” with promos for Blood Circus mixed in as “commercials”. I was familiar with the Santo Gold TV spots that aired in the DC market at this time (mid-’80s). But here was eight hours of this absurd program featuring Bob Harris shilling junk! Mind-boggling. Anyhow, I made lots of 3/4-inch video copies of this show and sent them to TV stations for late-night programming, no doubt when the airtime was cheap. Never got to meet the “client” or whomever dropped off and picked up the original master tapes.

I was going to post the video here when I saw that John had already beat me to it by posting a longer version of the clip on YouTube.

The very best part of this video is the clip at the beginning from the lost Santo Gold movie Blood Circus. What a tragedy it is that Blood Circus is not available anywhere!!

  • The Blood Circus scene in the beginning is great. That guy playing the “fight inspector” deserves an Oscar. “Take your money out of my city!”

I sure hope more Blood Circus scenes from this auction will be put online

  • I’m convinced that that’s Butch Willis in the background(the guy in the red suit and beard)…anyone who’s seen Butch’s video for his song “tv’s from outer space” knows that he and Santo were on the same wavelength.

  • Santo’s now selling a “Making of Blood Circus” DVD on his website; I’m curious, but there’s no way I’m giving him my credit card #(sorry, Santo!)

  • I just want to know how to get a copy of the entire infomercial. Does anyone know? I mean someone, obviously, has it because these clips are popping up all over the place. Can anyone help?

This auction clip is priceless. That guy in the red jacket is just the ultimate. Santo Gold was a genius.

Bob, if you are out there, I salute you.

  • Holy crap!

This is the most awesome clip ever!

I recall being mesmerized by the original 30 minute Santo Gold show back in 86-87. It was on TV in Syracuse, late at night. This was back when the TV stations turned off the power after Letterman ended. It popped up suddenly, then vanished again in the night, like a ghost. We had a sketch comedy show in college, on the student TV station, and a friend of mine wrote a parody of it called “Santo Goldfinger,” mixing Santo and James Bond. Maybe I’ll e-mail you a copy if my friend still has it.

Anyway, you have justified the existence of this website by keeping the Santo Gold flame alive. Where can I get this “Making of Santo Gold” DVD?

  • If I had one of those credit cards where you could only spend it after programming a limited amount of funds onto it, morbid curiosity would lead me to order the tape.
