Does Ruby Reds from Tony O’Donnell Really Taste Like Fruit Punch?

In March I created The Ruby Reds Tony O’Donnell Drinking Game, which suggested a fun way to spice up any viewing of the infomercial for the Ruby Reds health drink.

Recently the creator of the Ruby Reds vitamin drink, Tony O’Donell himself, emailed me about it. Tony told me that he had a good laugh at my post and offered to send me a bottle of Ruby Reds! So it turns out that Tony O’Donnell is actually a pretty cool guy! It is great to see someone in the infomercial biz—especially in the health field—who can actually laugh at himself. This puts Tony O’Donnell head and shoulders above all those infomercial personalities who sell health products and can’t take a joke at all. *cough* Klee Irwin *cough*

I took Tony up on his offer, and sure enough he sent me a bottle of his Ruby Reds supplement:

Now, I don’t normally review products on this website. (I only make jokes about the infomercials.) But I decided to make a small exception in this case. Of course, having tried it only once, I’m not qualified to judge the nutritional benefits of Ruby Reds. However, I can report on the veracity Tony O’Donnell’s claim that Ruby Reds “tastes like fruit punch.”

The directions on the Ruby Reds bottle say to mix 1 tablespoon of the powder with 4 to 8 ounces of filtered water using a shaker or blender. Being the lazy ass that I am, however, I used unfiltered tap water and just mixed it using a spoon.

And the verdict is…Yes, Ruby Reds does have a fruity taste, much like fruit punch! Now, it may not give you visions of the Kool Aid man or Hawaiian Punch guy, but Ruby Reds does not at all taste bad or medicine-like.

I then went a little further and tested the suggestion in my earlier post that people use spiked Ruby Reds to play the Tony O’Donnell drinking game. So I mixed some Bacardi Rum and Ruby Reds.

The Ruby Reds rum cocktail tasted fine and would make a great beverage to drink while watching the Ruby Reds infomercial on TV or listening to it on radio. (Note: This recipe is NOT approved by Tony O’Donnell or New Vitality for its health benefits!)

  • Wow what a Great Idea!! Thank God for Tony and all of the other personalities, wouldnt it be great if we were able to get Tony and others to join in one huge drinking game with other personalities like Joe Fowler and his orgasmic expressions everytime he tries Salmon and asparagus, or Joe Farargo and Heidi Bohay, Dr. Monita Podyal from the ”Supple Beverages infomercial” (that would be great to see her play strip poker;) also Jack Lalane , hell we could use his power juicer to mix some other crazy drinks together! and also the entire Oscar Worthy cast of the Magic Bullet! …

  • I have stopped counting the number of times I have listened to the radio spot over the years. It seemed to be playing on every other radio station across western North America at the same time.

Thanks for the review. I thought it might taste like red cabbage or something.

  • With all of the whiners, complainers and shills bashing Paul for his entertaining work, Tony’s response is a breath of fresh air. He took all of the humor in stride and made the most of the situation. That’s some real class right there.
