BluBlockers Rap Classic Video

September 6th, 2007 Paul Lucas

Here’s one of those offbeat little moments in an infomercial that just seems to stick in everyone’s mind. From the infomercial for Blu Blocker sunglasses it’s “Dr Geek” rapping on Venice Beach about his BluBlockers:

And you can see more at the Official BluBlockers website.

By the way, the BluBlockers infomercial was brought to the world by legendary direct response marketing guru Joseph Sugarman.

  1. This isn’t about BluBlockers it’s about the Magic Bullet infomercial. Have you seen the sequel infomercial for the Magic Bullet to Go? It doesn’t seem to have been mentioned on here which is surprising because its like the zenith of infomercials. It has Berman and Hazel (who have apparently hooked up the night before) and also the “amazed blond” - and btw a previous poster who was very clever was right, her name is Tina. They say it during the MBtG commercial. However apparently she either isn’t married to Ike any more or never was because her husband in this one is called Dino. (Fred and Wilma don’t appear but there are new friends called Barney and Betty.) Its also a bit bizarre because the first half is at a camp ground, and then they leave and go to a beach, which doesn’t seem to be possible. I think it was supposed to be a joke. They also make oblique references to the original commercial (like when the new guests give them attitude about how they don’t think the machine can do what they say it does, Tina says something like “Just let them go”). They missed some good chances to make jokes about the other commercial to amuse the legions of fans (ie when Mick uses garlic powder Mimi could have said “Garlic powder for everything”).

  2. I have not seen the Magic Bullet to Go infomercial, but from your description I am VERY easy to see it for myself. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it.

  3. Thank you for posting this!!! I loved this commercial back in the day & I am STILL talking about BluBlockers. Watching this again was like sweet, delicious candy.

  4. Holy Moly, I haven’t seen “Dr. Geek” in quite a while. He used to prowl around Hollywood Blvd. near the Chinese Theater mostly, but I did see him in Venice and also on Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Him and the guy pained silver from head to toe who danced “The Robot.”

I used to live in Hollywood so I saw the guy all the time. In the past few years though guys like that have been muscled out by the people wearing superhero/movie character costumes and pose for pictures for tips. Spiderman, Chewbacca, Charlie Chaplin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Marilyn Monroe, and a new one recently, “Captain Jack Sparrow.”

Yes, the Marilyn Monroes were actually women. This was Hollywood, not West Hollywood.

  5. I remember the BluBlockers commercial, it’s been so long since I’ve seen it. This guy came to my middle school once, but I can’t remember what it was for.
