Anyone Remember a Tom Bosley Computer Infomercial?

Ridiculous Infomercial Review reader Paul recently sent me the following email:

Just a quick question. Do you know what the Tom Bosley computer informercial was in the late 80’s?
It had trailer bound rednecks giving testomonials to how great this computer was, when in fact it was a glorified Atari game?
Thanx
Paul

The only infomercial I remember with Tom Bosley was the one for the SMC (Specialty Merchandise Corporation) business opportunity, which doesn’t sound like the one Paul had in mind.

If anybody remembers this Tom Bosley computer infomercial (which from Paul’s description sounds like it was hilarious) please leave a comment and tell us what you know.

  • “He has endorsed Glad Trash Bags, D-Con, the IQ Computer and Sonic Drive-Ins, and currently is the spokesman for SMC Specialty Merchandise Corporation.”

  • YESS!!!! I do, and I think it was called the Wizard Computer, or the Wizard 2000, or something cliche and pathetic like that. It was like a rebranded TRS-80 or something. Horrible. Tom Bosley has endorsed too many things, and his latest SMC “pyramid scheme marketing cult” endorsement makes me vomit.

I would love to see that infomercial again. I must be a masochist. Someone has to have it on tape somewhere (hopefully by accident!) and I’d bet anything sooner or later it will surface on YouTube, if its not there already!

Glad I’m not the only one who saw that!!

  • I remember this…gosh, I wish I could watch it again to make fun of it. They marketed the computer as a “simpler” alternative to the PC’s they had back then, which were more complicated to set up back then. (I’m pretty sure this was around the time of Windows 3.1 or maybe even a little earlier.) But yeah, there were basically like 5 built in programs, including one for organizing bills and another cheesy trivia game thing for kids. I don’t think you could actually add programs and I’m positive it wasn’t compatible with any other computers on the market. I was like 12 at the time, and I remember thinking “isn’t this the guy from Happy Days? Why does he need to do these infomercials?”

  • I have never seen this infomercial, but now i want to! I did (mistakenly) get into the SMC reselling for a while, now whenever i see this man’s face it brings nothing but bad memories of that failed endeavor.

Any chance to have a chuckle at his expense is well worth it to me 🙂

  • I remember that commercial as well. It was Tom Bosley explaining all the benefits of this computer to a little kid, then some testimonials. I used to see that all the time as a kid…
