Looking for a Tape of the Psychic Gary Spivey Infomercial

August 22nd, 2006 Paul Lucas

Recently I received an email from Patrick at videocassette.blogspot.com. It appears he had the infomercial of psychic Gary Spivey on tape but lost it. He asked me if I happened to have a copy of it.

Alas, I do not have a copy of it. And it’s a shame too. Gary Spivey’s psychic infomercial was one of the great all time infomercials. It aired sometime in the mid-90s, and consisted of MTV VJ Downtown Julie Brown running around trying to find Gary Spivey. (I can’t remember why she was hunting him down.) It was a lot like Downtown Julie Brown was Dorothy and she was seeking the Wizard in the form of psychic Gary Spivey. But instead of traveling through Munchkinland, she seemed to wind her way through a lot of nightclubs (I vaguely remember that this thing took place in Miami’s South Beach) and instead of meeting the Tin Man she ran into a guy named Fez who wore a fez. Fez seemed to be quite familiar with Spivey and one can only speculate as to what kind of “companions” Fez and Gary really were. With the help of Fez, Downtown Julie Brown eventually tracks down the psychic. I think he gave her a psychic reading that made her cry.

Despite all of that, probably the only thing most people will remember about Gary Spivey is his bizarre white helmet of Afro-like hair. What the hell is that? Is it supposed to enhance his psychic powers? This hideous monstrosity was never actually mentioned in the infomercial; nor is it explained on his website.

Anyway, if anyone had the wisdom and foresight to get this classically awful infomercial on tape I would certainly appreciate having a copy of it, as I would very much like to write about it on the Ridiculous Infomercial Review. Please contact me through this page.

  1. OMG, when I seen the photo of that psychic, I literally was laughing to tears. I totally forgot all about that infomercial. It was that guy’s weird hair that I remember most about him.

  2. I have met Gary and he is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet - no kidding.

While it may give you content on your site - poking fun of someone who dresses differently and slamming them without knowing them is kind of grade school don’t you think? I hope you rethink your comments - or post a photo of yourself and invite people to slam you a bit.

Rating infomercials as bad is one thing but cutting down- actually ripping him to shreds - a guy just because you think he looks different is another.

Since you visited his website - you could have contacted him and asked about his hair. Decent guy that he is - he probably would have given you the resaon behind the look.

The interesting thing is - he’s a lot smarter than you realize - he has a built in PR machine based on how he dresses.

  5. I saw this site and wanted to know what you were looking for. The comment the person made about gary is true. I have meet him and spoken to him a couple of times and he is a really nice guy. He is very smart and successful. The dress is a PR thing and he has gotten to where he is through his image.

  6. jesus christ people, stop bitching! the guy could be a saint and he would STILL have stupid looking hair. if its a PR thing than you should be thankful that he’s laughing at it. this is probably the first time ever i saw people rushing to defend a “psychic” swindler
